Dr. Whittaker received his Bachelor of Science (Hon Mathematics) and M.D. from the University of British Columbia.  He did internal medicine training and gastroenterology training at the University of Toronto followed by a Medical Research Counsil Fellowship in the field of nutrition under the supervision of Dr. K. N. Jeejeebhoy.  From 1984 to 1988, he was on active staff at UBC Hospital and since 1988 he has been on the active staff at St. Paul's Hospital.

 

Research interests have been in the field of nutrition, with initial work involving glucose metabolism, nutritional assessment and the effect of nutrition on muscle function.  More recent interests have been in the area of home parenteral nutrition.

Dr. Whittaker has been teaching undergraduate, internal medicine and gastroenterology fellows since his arrival on staff in Vancouver in 1984.  He is a member of the Examination Board of Gastroenterology of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and therefore has been involved in preparing and performing examinations of Fellowship candidates.

Dr. Whittaker is a member of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association and the Royal College Of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
