Dr. Chaun graduated from Oxford University, trained in internal medicine in London, England and gastroenterology at UBC. He is past VP Secretary of CAG; chair, Congress News, 2005 WCOG Canadian Organizing Committee; past chair and current Secretary-Treasurer of CDHF; past Secretary-General and past President, Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology; and past Governor and Regional Councillor (Western Provinces) of ACG. He was recipient, College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC inaugural Award of Excellence; Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Service Award; and the 2016 CAG Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Chaun’s earliest clinical research interest was in intestinal parasitic infections and he published one of the first papers on the efficacy of thiabendazole in treating chronic recurrent cutaneous creeping eruptions in strongyloidiasis in former Far East prisoners-of-war. He collaborated with Dr. Hugh Freeman in early studies in Vancouver of the epidemiology of IBD in two Asian immigrant populations (Chinese and Asian Indians). As the consultant gastroenterologist in the provincial Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic (1980-2005), he published papers and presented abstracts on the gastrointestinal complications of adult CF patients. He has also had a clinical research interest in GERD in the local Asian ethnic populations.
